HORSE RACESRate It [ 0.00 / 0 Votes ] Any thoughts?
There are all sorts of races you can bet at the track. Each race has specific characteristics. The type of race is always listed in the track program.
CLAIMING RACES: Horses in this race are for sale at the race for a specified price. For example, in a $10,000 claiming race, all of the horses in the race may be bought or claimed for $10,000. This price keeps the field relatively evenly matched.
MAIDEN RACES: Horses that run in maiden races have never won in any of their previous starts.
STAKES RACES: These races offer large prizes (known as purses) to the top finishing horses. Horse owners usually have to pay an entrance fee and starting fee. The Kentucky Derby is an example of a major stakes race. Stakes races usually attract the best horses.
Here are more types of horse races you will encounter at the track or in a track program.
HANDICAP RACES: These races, like stakes races, also attract top horses. The track handicapper evaluates the horses entered to determine which is the best and which is the weakest. The better horses are required to carry more weight in an attempt to even the field.
ALLOWANCE RACES: An allowance race specifies that all of the horses entered meet a specific qualification (for example, horses that have won only a maiden race and no other). In many cases, weights are added to stronger horses in allowance raises to further even the field.
